Biomarker: Group A Streptococcus

What is Strep A?

Group A Streptococcus (Strep A) is a type of bacteria that can cause infections like strep throat, which is common in children and adults. Symptoms usually include sore throat, fever, and swollen tonsils — but strep needs different treatment than a viral sore throat, making fast diagnosis important.

Why Test for Strep A?

Strep throat is bacterial, which means it may require antibiotics. But many sore throats are viral and don’t — so testing before treating helps you avoid unnecessary antibiotics and start recovery faster when needed.
